Demystifying the Defence Industry: pathways to success!

The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) and SA.Net is proud to invite you to their next joint event on the defence industry. Come along and hear from two senior defence industry representatives who will provide you with a thorough background on the workings of the defence industry and offer some great insights into how you can improve business opportunities within this sector.


Guest Speakers:

Leonie Beck, Defence Material Organisation (DMO)

Leonie moved to Adelaide in February 2010 to take up the role of Deputy State Manager – Industry Liaison, in the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) Business Access Office (BAO) - South Australia and is currently acting in the role of State Manager DMO BAO - SA. Prior to her move to South Australia, Leonie worked in the West Australia DMO BAO in Perth. Leonie began her career with the DMO as a graduate on the Materiel Graduate Scheme (MGS) and also has experience working as a Contract Officer for Phase 3 of the Overlander Program in Land Systems Division of the DMO in Melbourne, her home town.

Leonie holds a Bachelor of Business (International Business), Bachelor of Arts (Japanese), a Diploma of Sustainability from Swinburne University in Melbourne and studied on the Kansai Gaidai University Asian Studies Program for one year in Osaka, Japan. Leonie is currently studying for her Masters in Arts (Strategy and Policy) at the Australian Defence Force Academy.

Charles Rudder, SME Gateway

Mr. Rudder brings to SME Gateway over 45 years of industrial experience in which he has had cumulative responsibilities for engineering, manufacturing, quality assurance, contract management, subcontracts and materiel purchasing, and international programs.  He held senior positions in Boeing (previously McDonnell Douglas) in the Military Aircraft and Missiles divisions, General Dynamics in the Land Systems Division, GenCorp Aerojet in the development and production of smart weapons systems and vehicle electronics, and Emerson Electric for the development of combat sensor systems for surveillance, reconnaissance, and fire control applications. He also has managed SME companies in the United States and Australia that are engaged in product development based on electronics. His experience includes business development and contract management in more than 20 countries.

In 1996 he established the Defence Teaming Centre (DTC) in South Australia as an industry association to promote teaming and collaboration amongst SMEs to gain a competitive position in winning business with the Department of Defence.  Upon departing the DTC he became the CEO of AeroTeam Limited in Queensland to structure an SME based organisation for developing new business for the industry. At SME Gateway Limited he has structured the company for collaborative contracting which has resulted in winning contracts totaling approximately $42 million over the past 46 months.
